David Handelman was an American screenwriter and journalist. He was a Story Editor for the first season of The Newsroom. The Newsroom creator Aaron Sorkin has worked with Handelman on his earlier series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, The West Wing, and Sports Night. He worked freelance on Sports Night and was a Staff Writer on both The West Wing and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. He has also written episodes of Love Monkey and One Tree Hill. He was a print journalist for Rolling Stone, Vogue, and other publications, and then worked freelance as a writer on Aaron Sorkin's Sports Night across the first two seasons from 1999 to 2000. He wrote for two episodes "The Sword of Orion" and "The Sweet Smell of Air".
He was a Staff Writer for the fourth season of Sorkin's The West Wing from 2002 to 2003. He wrote for two episodes "Election Night" and "Evidence of Things Not Seen".
He joined the crew of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip as a Staff Writer for "The Cold Open" when the series was picked up for a full season in 2006. He co-wrote the story for the episode "Nevada Day: Part 2" with fellow Staff Writer Cinque Henderson. Sorkin wrote the teleplay for the episode. Handelman and Henderson are both working for Sorkin again as writers for The Newsroom. Handelman co-wrote the story for the episode "Monday" with Story Editor Dana Calvo. Sorkin again wrote the teleplay for the episode. Handelman left the series mid-season after "The Harriet Dinner: Part I".
Since Studio 60 he has written episodes of Love Monkey and One Tree Hill. He served as a Story Editor for the sixth season of One Tree Hill in the 2008 to 2009 television season.
He reunited with Sorkin as a Story Editor for The Newsroom in 2012. He did not work on the series pilot and joined the crew when the first season was ordered. He debuted with the second episode "News Night 2.0". He shares the Story Editor role with Ian Reichbach. Reichbach was a Writer's Assistant on Studio 60.
Handelman passed away on August 15, 2024 at the age of 63.[1]
