111th Congress[]
Delaney served his tenth term as a Congressman for the GOP (Grand Old Party) in the 111th Congress. He represents the eighth district of Colorado. He was a Deputy Whip for his party and the state co-chair of the McCain / Palin campaign. During his ten terms he sponsored or co-sponsored 38 pieces of legislation that were written into law. He has a consistent voting record on Conservative Issues and a 97% approval rating from the American Conservative Union. During the past five elections he won his District by double figures. Delaney was the 6th GOP incumbent to be ousted by a Tea Party candidate in the 112th Congressional Elections. He lost the Republican primary in his district to a Dentist by a 72 to 28 margin. ("The 112th Congress")
He is interviewed on News Night by anchor Will McAvoy following his defeat. He relates that his press secretary blamed the defeat on him giving the wrong answer to a question at a Town Hall meeting. When asked "Is President Obama a socialist?" He answered "I disagree with the man on how to run a government but the talk of him being a socialist, or a Marxist, or a Kenyan, is a silly distraction." He went from leading the polls before the meeting to losing the election. Delaney says that the individual price that Republican Party members are paying for not pretending to be crazy is insignificant compared to the damage that the movement will do to the country as a whole by robbing it of a reasonable opposition party. Will brings up a second mistake the Congressman made; he co-sponsored a bill with a Democratic colleague. The bill was an honest piece of bipartisan legislation named HR2559 which provided for homeless veterans to receive housing vouchers, counselling and job training.
